Safety in Industrial Factory
According to industrial law, a factory is a building comprised of, at least, 7 employees, or more. Now that industrial areas in Thailand have recently and rapidly grown; there are many employees or persons involved in the factories. The factory then needs laborers to work with machines, and that might create dangerous working environment. Therefore, there must be safety standards to control and guidelines for every person involved.
There are various elements of safety standards for industrial factories. Those regarding factory and building constructions are as follows,
Element 1: Heat
1. The heat inside the workplace should not be so hot that it affects the employees’ body temperature to go up above 38°C.
2. The employers should provide tools and equipment to prevent the heat for all employees and also methods to quickly lower the temperature in case there is a situation that the temperature goes up and causes the employees’ body temperature to go up above 38°C.
3. In case there is a situation that the temperature goes up and causes the employees’ body temperature to go up above 38°C, the employers must allow the employees to stop and rest until the body temperature is back to normal.
4. The employers should make a warning sign in the areas that are dangerous to employees, e.g., the area that produces the heat and is so hot that affects personnel’ health and safety.
5. The employers should provide working methods in case any employees need to work around the area that produces the heat, higher than 45°C. The employees must always be equipped with proper uniform, gloves, and shoes during the work for the safety and to prevent the heat that might affect their bodies.
Element 2: Light
1. Tasks which do not require meticulous operations, e.g., grinding, moving, and packaging, are to be performed where the light intensity is higher than 50 lux.
2. In the place used to store materials, e.g., storage rooms, warehouses, and also verandas and stairs within the building, the light intensity should be higher than 50 lux.
3. Tasks which requires minor meticulous operations, e.g., rice milling, lite productions, and lite products assembly, should be performed in a place where the light intensity is higher than 100 lux.
4. Tasks which requires moderate meticulous operations, e.g., container assembly, clothes and leather sewing, should be performed in a place where the light intensity is higher than 100 lux.
5. Tasks which requires high meticulous operations, e.g., product testing and investigating, machine repairing, and metal lathe, should be performed in a place where the light intensity is higher than 300 lux.
6. Tasks which requires extremely high meticulous operations, e.g., dark color clothes sewing, tiny part assembly, and gemstones cutting and polishing, should be performed in a place where the light intensity is higher than 1000 lux.
7. In walking areas outside the buildings, including roads, the light intensity should be higher than 20 lux.
Apart from safety standards in the factory regarding the building, location, and factory construction, there are also safety standards in other categories, which should be thoroughly studied and strictly followed by the business owner to reduce chances of accidents in the work place, help increasing the life safety in factories and production lines, and also increase productivities and profits of the owners.
